What To Expect

On your initial visit I will discuss with you the reason(s) that you are seeing treatment and what you are looking to get from treatment.  After an initial dialogue, I will do a assessment of your body’s movements which may include the following:

  • Postural analysis
  • Active movement analysis
  • Restricted movement analysis and muscle strength testing
  • Soft tissue analysis through palpation and listening techniques
  • Passive movement analysis of various joints of the body
After this process, I will begin treatment using this information as a guide to where to best apply manual therapy techniques.  Clients may be asked to repeat movement/pain tests during the session in order to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.  After the hands on treatment I will often give advice and/or exercises that will help improve the client’s function and decrease pain/irritation for the future.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle modality that involves the manipulation of the sutures of the skull and the membranous soft tissues of the head, neck and lower back in order to relieve stress and tensions that frequently cause dysfunction in these and surrounding areas.

Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation is another gentle modality that focuses on releasing the fascial and muscular components of visceral organs in order to reestablish fluid movements of these structures within the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic cavities. Visceral tensions are often associated with pain and dysfunction in nearby musculoskeletal structures.

Myofascial Release

Light to Heavy pressure is used to release adhesions in connective tissues (tendon, ligament, fascia) or lengthen short and tight muscles. This technique is often used to increase range of motion of joints that have become limited due to soft tissue tension.

Muscle Energy Technique (MET)

MET involves utilizing a patient’s muscle contractions in order to facilitate a release in a nearby joint. This form of joint mobilization is often better tolerated than the high velocity, thrusting mobilizations more common in manual therapy clinics. Effectively mobilizing joints in this way can increase range of motion, decrease pain associated with active movements and improve joint function.

Never have I found a therapist as skilled as Joel in sports specific treatment.

Joel has helped me relieve several sports related knee and hip problems. He is genuine, professional, and has taught me so much about my body and it’s movement.”

He is the best body worker out there!

I’ve had bodywork in  San Diego, Las Vegas, Calexico, Palo Alto, Mexico, and San Francisco, and believe me, there is nobody like Joel.  He is easy to communicate with: an excellent listener.  I’ve had arthritis for 7 years now, and I always feel my best after seeing Joel.  He also knows a lot about nutrition, so it’s always a pleasure to talk to him.
